A No-Claim Discount (NCD) entitles you to a lower car insurance premium. The maximum NCD you can have is 50% and the lowest is 0%. Thus the discount you get depends on how high your NCD is. This is one of the ways you are rewarded for being a safe driver.

If you have not made any insurance claim in the past 1 year, your NCD will increase by 10%. The 2 tables below illustrate this:

For Private Cars:

Period Without Claims

NCD on Renewal

1 year

10%

2 years

20%

3 years

30%

4 years

40%

5 years or more

50%

For Commercial Vehicles and Motorcycles:

Period Without Claims

NCD on Renewal

1 year

10%

2 years

15%

3 years or more

20%

With the above in mind, it does not necessarily mean you will lose your NCD if you make an insurance claim.

In Singapore, insurers depend on a benchmark known as the Barometer of Liability Agreement (BOLA) to determine what your responsibility is for each accident you get into. As long as it is less than 20%, your NCD will not be affected.

Otherwise your NCD may drop by 30%, as illustrated in the table below:

Current NCD

NCD on Renewal

50%

becomes 20%

40%

becomes 10%

30% or less

becomes 0%

There is a common misunderstanding about No-Claims Discount you must know about. People are often confused whether their NCD applies to them or their vehicle.

Technically, your NCD applies to you. This means whether you switch to another insurer or buy another vehicle, your NCD remains with you. Nevertheless if you own a second car, the NCD for that vehicle will have to start from 0%.

In other words, your NCD can be transferred from one insurer to another and from one car to another. But it cannot be transferred from one person to another.

(NCD also cannot be transferred from one vehicle class to another. For example, you cannot transfer your Motorcycle’s 20% NCD to your Car or vice versa.)

If you are concerned about losing your NCD in case of an accident, you can buy an NCD protector. Most insurers only allow you to buy this rider if your NCD is at 50%. With this, even if you make an insurance claim, your NCD will not drop.

However you have to bear in mind that your NCD protector cannot be transferred from one insurer to another. This means if you want to retain your NCD at 50% after an accident, you have to renew with your existing insurer.

Finally, if you don’t own a car (or vehicle) for more than 12 months, you will lose your NCD. For example, if you sold off your car and went overseas, then bought a car again after more than 12 months, your NCD will start from 0% again.

If your car insurance renewal is near, you may find a great insurer by getting car insurance quotes from as many as 12 different car insurers. Simply take 2 minutes to fill up the form at www.motorinsurancesingapore.com and the best 3 quotes will be sent to you.

If you have bought an NTUC car insurance before, you’ll probably know how to renew your motor insurance with NTUC Income. The process is easy and hassle free.

About one month before your car insurance expires, the insurer will send you a renewal notice. You can simply follow their step-by-step instruction to renew and pay for your car insurance.

This renewal notice serves as a reminder to renew your car insurance and your road tax. You may have to send your car for inspection before you can renew your road tax though. Inside this document, your car insurance renewal premium and the excess are stated.

Other than that, the insurance start date is also mentioned. In order to avoid problems renewing your road tax down the road, it is advisable to align your car insurance start date to your road tax start date.

To do this, you can simply request to extend your insurance policy or cut it short. It’ll be helpful if you can let the customer service officer know your intention to align your car insurance date with the road tax date.

After considering NTUC’s offer, you can choose to insure your car again with NTUC or source for quotes elsewhere.

In general, if the car insurance premium is less than the previous year, motorists wouldn’t mind renewing with their existing insurer. Otherwise they will readily find several other car insurance quotes from elsewhere to compare.

Why Do Customers Want to Renew Their Car Insurance With NTUC?

There are a few advantages to renewing your car insurance with NTUC. First, for being a repeat customer, you can enjoy a better rate.

Also, NTUC Income has improved their customer service by a great deal in the past 1-2 years. Therefore complaints you may have heard about are mostly a thing of the past.

Recently NTUC Income also organized an Orange Force Accident Response Team to assist customers in case they meet with an accident.

They can be called upon in a moment’s notice and they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. On top of that, they will offer assistance regardless of where you are in Singapore.

The Orange Force Team moves about in a special 3-wheeled bike. Therefore even traffic congestion will not impede their quick response.

Having said this, we must also remember that NTUC car insurance is not perfect. Just like any insurance company, there will be times when customers are not happy with them for one reason or another.

Nevertheless it is important to understand that NTUC’s customer service officers are willing to solve those problems when they arise.

Apart from renewing your car insurance with NTUC Income, you can also protect your vehicle with other reputable insurers like Chartis Insurance, AXA Insurance, India International, etc.

To get quotes from these companies and more, click on www.motorinsurancesingapore.com and request for them.

There are occasions when your NTUC car insurance may need to be cancelled before it is due. When this happens you can get back the remaining (unused) value of your policy.

There are occasions when your NTUC car insurance may need to be cancelled before it is due. When this happens you can get back the remaining (unused) value of your policy. As such, a little knowledge on how to estimate your refund value and how to cancel your policy may be helpful.

Why Do People Cancel Their Car Insurance Policy?

The most common reason is because they have sold their car and bought a new one. In this case, the existing insurance policy will not be applicable for the new car. Therefore it has to be cancelled and a new motor insurance policy enforced.

Secondly, if the car is lost through fire or theft, or if it is damaged beyond economical repair, it has to be scrapped. When this happens, the car insurance policy will automatically lapse. The market value of your vehicle will be paid out to you and you may choose to purchase another vehicle using the compensation.

As a side note, NTUC Income will not refund any unused policy value if at least one claim was made within the policy term. (This is generally the same for other insurers too.)

Another reason why an NTUC car insurance could be cancelled is because the details provided on the application form is incorrect. As such, the policy will not be valid since it is based on erroneous information. Therefore it has to be cancelled and a new contract reinforced.

An amendment (known as an endorsement) can be passed to correct minor mistakes though. Nevertheless the premiums may not remain the same.

What’s the Procedure like?

NTUC Income may cancel a car insurance policy by giving seven days’ notice at your last known address and you must return your original Certificate of Insurance to them.

You may also initiate the cancellation by notifying them in writing or by teleconversation. You must return your original Certificate of Insurance thereafter. The cancellation will take effect from the date NTUC Income receives your original Certificate of Insurance.

How To Calculate the Premium Refund?

The formula for premium refund depends on whether you’ll take up another insurance policy with NTUC Income within the next 90 days:

(i) If you take up another NTUC Income policy within 90 days:

Premium Refund = Premium * Unexpired Period of Insurance / Original Period of Insurance

(ii) Otherwise:

Premium Refund = 85% of Premium * Unexpired Period of Insurance / Original Period of Insurance

If the remaining unused premium is less than the minimum sum of $25, no refund will be made.

In summary, to cancel an NTUC car insurance policy, this is what you have to do:

1. Email or call up NTUC
2. Send in your Certificate of Insurance
3. Wait for the refund cheque in your mailbox

Every NTUC car insurance policy you buy insures you against third party claim liabilities. This means if anyone (third party) sues you for losses or damages, your insurance policy can pay out the compensation. You won’t have to dip into your own pocket to handle such eventualities.

Under NTUC Income, you will be protected against legal liabilities due to any accident. Thus you are covered against any deaths or bodily injury you cause to anyone. And you are protected (up to S$5,000,000) from any potential damage you may cause to any property arising from any one accident.

If someone else drives your car and gets into an accident, he is also covered. This is provided he or she is not concurrently insured under other car insurance policies. The coverage even extends to any of your passengers who are getting in and out of your vehicle or simply riding in it.

This benefit also applies should you be driving any other car not belonging or hired to you, provided this particular car is not covered by any other insurance for any loss or liability.

Medical Expenses

NTUC Income pays you, your named driver or your passengers up to $300 for medical expenses. Each party must be injured whilst in your car as a direct and immediate result of an accident involving your vehicle. Also, the number of passengers in your vehicle at the time of the accident must not exceed its seating capacity.

Personal Accident Benefits

Payment for personal accident benefits is shown in the Scale of Compensation issued together with your Certificate of Insurance. Each of your passengers and authorised driver will receive half of the amount stated.

Under the scale of compensation, you may receive the following amounts in case of eventualities:

- Death: $20,000
- Total and irrecoverable loss of all sight in both eyes: $20,000
- Total loss by physical severance at or above the wrist or ankle of both hands or both feet or of one hand together with one foot: $20,000
- Total loss by physical severance at or above the wrist or ankle of one hand or one foot together with the total and irrecoverable loss of all sight in one eye: $20,000
- Total and irrecoverable loss of all sight in one eye: $10,000
- Total loss by physical severance at or above wrist or ankle of one hand or one foot: $10,000

Finally, please note that you will find many exclusions as you read through the policy wording. This is because the insurer does not want anybody to profit from accidents nor take advantage of any loopholes in their insurance policy.

Apart from NTUC car insurance, you can also opt for Chartis car insurance or AXA car insurance. If you need car insurance quotes from reputable insurance companies such as these (and more), click on www.motorinsurancesingapore.com to find out more.

Before we go into how to get rid of those tailgaters, let’s look at why it’s dangerous to tailgate. This is a mini-lesson in case some who tailgated you are also reading this. =)

1. Following too closely results in almost all of those multi-vehicle collisions on the highway;
2. Tailgating-related accidents are not minor in terms of injuries and fatalities;
3. Following too closely restricts your vision. Your reaction will be slower if something happens ahead;
4. Yes…if you’re closer than the “two-second” rule suggests, you’re too close…oh, that means you’re tailgating!

Those tailgaters are gone? …whew! Let’s get on to the real stuff.

Tip #1: Add their following distance to yours. (Now the 2-second rule becomes the 4-second rule.) That means you can gradually stop in case anything happens in front of you. Most of the time, the tailgater will simply get pissed off and overtake you or move to another lane.

Tip #2: Slow down below the normal traffic speed. Again, these guys will simply get impatient and overtake you or switch lane. Just that now it becomes easier for them to do so since you’re slightly slower than the usual flow of traffic.

While you may feel intimidated or even angry that you’re being tailgated, tapping your brakes to “send a signal” or slamming your brakes doesn’t solve the problem. In fact you may even become a victim of road rage. Simply follow the 2 points above and keep your cool. At least you can laugh at those tailgaters while they’re fuming because of something as trivial as slow-moving traffic.

Spark plugs are now timed with on-board computers. This has eliminated the need for regular tune-ups…but you still need to change your spark plugs regularly. Most manufacturers recommend changing spark plugs every 48,000 or 64,000 km to ensure good fuel mileage and engine performance.

You’re in luck if your car can be fitted with long-life plugs (double platinum plugs) that can last for 160,000 km. Otherwise, it’s recommended to make the switch after 48,000 km. Spark plugs aren’t expensive. But the extra pick up can give you the satisfaction you’re deprived of while firing off with old, dirty spark plugs.
