A No-Claim Discount (NCD) entitles you to a lower car insurance premium. The maximum NCD you can have is 50% and the lowest is 0%. Thus the discount you get depends on how high your NCD is. This is one of the ways you are rewarded for being a safe driver.

If you have not made any insurance claim in the past 1 year, your NCD will increase by 10%. The 2 tables below illustrate this:

For Private Cars:

Period Without Claims

NCD on Renewal

1 year

10%

2 years

20%

3 years

30%

4 years

40%

5 years or more

50%

For Commercial Vehicles and Motorcycles:

Period Without Claims

NCD on Renewal

1 year

10%

2 years

15%

3 years or more

20%

With the above in mind, it does not necessarily mean you will lose your NCD if you make an insurance claim.

In Singapore, insurers depend on a benchmark known as the Barometer of Liability Agreement (BOLA) to determine what your responsibility is for each accident you get into. As long as it is less than 20%, your NCD will not be affected.

Otherwise your NCD may drop by 30%, as illustrated in the table below:

Current NCD

NCD on Renewal

50%

becomes 20%

40%

becomes 10%

30% or less

becomes 0%

There is a common misunderstanding about No-Claims Discount you must know about. People are often confused whether their NCD applies to them or their vehicle.

Technically, your NCD applies to you. This means whether you switch to another insurer or buy another vehicle, your NCD remains with you. Nevertheless if you own a second car, the NCD for that vehicle will have to start from 0%.

In other words, your NCD can be transferred from one insurer to another and from one car to another. But it cannot be transferred from one person to another.

(NCD also cannot be transferred from one vehicle class to another. For example, you cannot transfer your Motorcycle’s 20% NCD to your Car or vice versa.)

If you are concerned about losing your NCD in case of an accident, you can buy an NCD protector. Most insurers only allow you to buy this rider if your NCD is at 50%. With this, even if you make an insurance claim, your NCD will not drop.

However you have to bear in mind that your NCD protector cannot be transferred from one insurer to another. This means if you want to retain your NCD at 50% after an accident, you have to renew with your existing insurer.

Finally, if you don’t own a car (or vehicle) for more than 12 months, you will lose your NCD. For example, if you sold off your car and went overseas, then bought a car again after more than 12 months, your NCD will start from 0% again.

If your car insurance renewal is near, you may find a great insurer by getting car insurance quotes from as many as 12 different car insurers. Simply take 2 minutes to fill up the form at www.motorinsurancesingapore.com and the best 3 quotes will be sent to you.

If you have bought an NTUC car insurance before, you’ll probably know how to renew your motor insurance with NTUC Income. The process is easy and hassle free.

About one month before your car insurance expires, the insurer will send you a renewal notice. You can simply follow their step-by-step instruction to renew and pay for your car insurance.

This renewal notice serves as a reminder to renew your car insurance and your road tax. You may have to send your car for inspection before you can renew your road tax though. Inside this document, your car insurance renewal premium and the excess are stated.

Other than that, the insurance start date is also mentioned. In order to avoid problems renewing your road tax down the road, it is advisable to align your car insurance start date to your road tax start date.

To do this, you can simply request to extend your insurance policy or cut it short. It’ll be helpful if you can let the customer service officer know your intention to align your car insurance date with the road tax date.

After considering NTUC’s offer, you can choose to insure your car again with NTUC or source for quotes elsewhere.

In general, if the car insurance premium is less than the previous year, motorists wouldn’t mind renewing with their existing insurer. Otherwise they will readily find several other car insurance quotes from elsewhere to compare.

Why Do Customers Want to Renew Their Car Insurance With NTUC?

There are a few advantages to renewing your car insurance with NTUC. First, for being a repeat customer, you can enjoy a better rate.

Also, NTUC Income has improved their customer service by a great deal in the past 1-2 years. Therefore complaints you may have heard about are mostly a thing of the past.

Recently NTUC Income also organized an Orange Force Accident Response Team to assist customers in case they meet with an accident.

They can be called upon in a moment’s notice and they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. On top of that, they will offer assistance regardless of where you are in Singapore.

The Orange Force Team moves about in a special 3-wheeled bike. Therefore even traffic congestion will not impede their quick response.

Having said this, we must also remember that NTUC car insurance is not perfect. Just like any insurance company, there will be times when customers are not happy with them for one reason or another.

Nevertheless it is important to understand that NTUC’s customer service officers are willing to solve those problems when they arise.

Apart from renewing your car insurance with NTUC Income, you can also protect your vehicle with other reputable insurers like Chartis Insurance, AXA Insurance, India International, etc.

To get quotes from these companies and more, click on www.motorinsurancesingapore.com and request for them.

There are many NTUC car insurance plans you can sign up for under NTUC Income. Thus there is bound to be a suitable motor insurance policy for you if you know what you want. The 2 most popular car insurance plans that car owners often choose are the Drivo Classic and the Drivo Premium Plan.

This article shows you what is covered in each of the motor insurance plan and which one you should go for.

Both motor insurance plans cover basic risks such as damage and loss due to fire or theft. This means that NTUC Income will compensate you if your car is burnt or gets stolen. On top of this, the insurer will pay for the repair costs needed to restore your vehicle after a collision.

Also, both insurance policies cover death or injury to third party and also compensate for damages to any property.

As a bonus, you can also replace your windscreen in case it breaks or suffer severe damage. However you are not allowed to use this benefit for chips or scratches.

Both Drivo Classic Plan and Drivo Premium Plan pays for your medical expenses incurred as a result of a car accident. You can claim up to $300 with the insurer in such cases. Also, you are entitled to claim up to $20,000 as Personal Accident compensation.

For each claim you make, an excess is applicable. The amount depends on factors such as your vehicle make and model as well as your age and driving experience. The excess will be computed along with the insurance premium so you know how much co-insurance you have to pay in the event of a claim.

On top of your policy excess, if an Unnamed Driver uses your car, he or she is subject to an Unnamed Driver Excess. Apart from this, additional excess is imposed if this authorized driver is below 27 years old or have less than 1 year’s driving experience.

If you meet with an accident bad enough such that your vehicle becomes dangerous to operate, a towing service is available to you at a moment’s notice.

What’s the Difference?

The main difference between the Classic Plan and the Premium Plan lies in the choice of workshop. The Premium plan allows you to go to your choice of workshop while the Classic Plan restricts you to its list of authorized workshops.

Some drivers will want to bring their car back to the distributor’s workshop while their car is still under the standard 3-year warranty. This is especially important if you own a continental car or if there are very few spare parts available for your particular car model.

If your car is under this category, the NTUC Drivo Premium Plan may be suitable for you. However you have to pay a little more for this flexibility. Therefore if this benefit is not essential for you, you may want to get the NTUC Drivo Classic plan instead. After all, you’ll save between 10% – 15% in premiums when you opt for this coverage.

Other than NTUC Income, reputable insurers such as AXA and Chartis (formally known as AIG) also offer reliable car insurance packages that you can rely on. To get quotes from these insurance companies as well as other recommended car insurers, check out the service at www.motorinsurancesingapore.com

Understanding your car insurance (Singapore) premiums can be quite a baffling thing. Numerous drivers have questioned about their car insurance premiums and yet have little understanding on how it all works.

This post give readers an insight on how car insurance companies in Singapore price their premiums – a real insider’s guide to the inner mechanism of how it works.

Car insurance premium is derived based on a Points System that takes mainly the following 2 categories of factors into consideration:

Category #1: Characteristics of Driver (Insured)

a) Age of Driver. Here’s the age group that most companies use and how much it affects your premiums:

18 to 21 yrs old — $$$$
22 to 25 yrs old — $$$
26 to 30 yrs old — $$
31 to 65 yrs old — $

b) Gender & Marital Status. Generally cheaper for females as compared to males; cheaper for married compared to singles.

c) Driving Experience. Calculated from the time you got your driving license, not your actual driving experience:

0 to 1 yrs experience — $$$$
1 to 2 yrs experience — $$$
2 to 4 yrs experience — $$
> 4 yrs experience — $

d) Job Nature (Indoor/Outdoor). Self-Explanatory.

Indoor – $
Outdoor – $$

e) No Claims Discount (NCD) – aka No Claims Bonus (NCB). This is the premium discount you can enjoy if you have not made claims with your insurance company

You get 10% NCD each year if you don’t make any claims during your policy year. Your NCB can accumulate up to 50% max.

For example, if your auto insurance is $1,000 and your NCD is 20%, the actual premium you’ll have to pay is $800.

If a claim is made during a policy year while you are still enjoying NCD, the NCD will be reduced the next time you renew your motor insurance.

f) Certificate of Merit Discount. A 5% discount is awarded to you (after deduction of NCD, if any) if you have NO traffic offense / demerit point(s) in the past 3 years.

Category #2: Characteristics of Vehicle

g) Engine Capacity (cc) & Engine Type. The lower the engine capacity, the lower your premium. Engine type refers to Normal or Turbo engine – obviously the turbo engine is going to be charged more.

h) Year of Manufacture. This generally means the year which your car is made/register.

i) Body Type. This refers to the type of car, eg. saloon, MPV, SUV, etc. Company usually charge more for unusual types of vehicle.

j) Off Peak Car (OPC). Generally, insurers tend to offer a slight discount for OPC.

Most car insurance (Singapore) quotations are valid only for 14 days, some for 30 days. And the price of car insurance premium change frequently – some people believe that it changes every 6-12 months. Therefore while Company X may offer the best deal this year, Company Y may be more competitive the next year.

This implies that you may have to compare different insurers’ quotes each time you renew your car insurance. You should get a good deal after comparing at least 6-7 companies. Of course, if you want the cheapest of all you’ll have to look for quotes from all the 20++ motor insurance companies in Singapore – and not all of them are good, really. In fact only some are worth looking at.

To compare several quotes, you can take 3 mins to fill in the form at Motor Insurance Singapore.

First, let’s look at why the MIB was set up. Its main purpose is to handle motor claims in cases where (1) the negligent driver cannot be traced/located, (2) the negligent driver possess an invalid motor car insurance policy, or (3) the negligent driver is not covered by any auto insurance at all.

Under the above situation, the MIB will seek to compensate the third party (victim) for any bodily injuries or death. Unfortunately damages to anything other than death and bodily injuries (take for example, property damages) are not claimable from the MIB.

To undertake this public responsibility, the MIB is funded by a small contribution (levy) paid by its members. And all motor insurers in Singapore are (mandatory) members of the MIB, and their contribution is based in proportion to the motor insurance premium income they earn.

This is a little known information although it’s being taught to all drivers during driving theory lessons. Little known, yet it may be useful. You never know – you may be able to help a helpless soul with this information some day in the future.

Why is it important to know how you’re charged for your motor car insurance? Because by knowing how you’re charged, you can somewhat get the best premium not only by comparing quotes, but also by influencing the factors that determines your auto (car or motorcycle) insurance pricing.

Insurers charge different premiums according to the risk they have to undertake. Most insurers in Singapore set the car insurance premium according to a range of factors. In general, the following are major factors that insurers take into consideration:

- Make and Model of Vehicle, Engine Capacity & Age of vehicle
- Nature of Vehicle Usage (private/corporate/commercial use, etc.)
- Age, Sex and Occupation of Driver
- Driver’s experience (No. of Years)
- Claims History of Driver
- Type of Cover (Third Party, Comprehensive, etc.)

Insurers will give each risk factor a weighting based on a range of statistics and their (insurers’) past claims information.

What do these information mean to you? You certainly may not want to change your vehicle nor change the type of cover nor the nature of vehicle usage. But you can try getting 6-7 quotes from different insurers because even though their coverage may be the same, their premiums may differ – sometimes by a long shot!

Some drivers also opt to insure their cars under another driver in their family who is more senior and who has more driving experience. Why do they do this?

In the perception of motor insurers, according to their statistics, a female has less risk than a male; a married individual has less risk than a single; and a more senior person has less risk than a young lad. (well, at least this is how the insurers see it)

Car Insurance Terms That Can Save You Some Money

In Singapore, knowing these motor car insurance terms may save you a couple of hundred dollars as you are shopping for an auto insurance package for your vehicle.

The idea is to know what you need and what you don’t. For example, you may not need a courtesy car or towing/roadside assistance. Adding these into your coverage may cost you a little more than you’ll need to pay for.

So get familiar with these terms now:

Motor Premiums
This is the amount ($) you pay to insure your car from eventualities. Ensure your premiums commensurate with your risk profile. Always make sure that you’re not over-paying for your car insurance (or motorcycle insurance).

Excess Amount (aka Deductible)
Find out the amount that you might be required to bear when a claim is made. Eg. If your claims amount to $2,000 and the deductible is $600, you’ll have to bear $600 while the rest will come from the insurer’s pocket.

Every insurer will impose excess on policies – the higher the excess, the lower the premium charged and vice versa. And each insurer will state their excess amount when they make their offer (quote) to motorists.

No Claim Discount (aka No Claim Bonus / No Claim Entitlement)
No Claim Discount (NCD) reduces your car insurance premium significantly. If you have an NCD of 20%, you’re given a 20% discount of the premiums that you’re supposed to pay. You are entitled to NCD on renewal if you have not made a claim for a year. This is how NCD is calculated for subsequent years:

If a claim is made during a policy year while you are still enjoying NCD, the NCD will be reduced at the next policy renewal. The reduction of NCD is computed as follows:

Windscreen Damage
Many insurers provide you with windscreen cover (free of charge) but apply an excess of $100 for each claim. (check insurers’ policy)

Personal Accident Cover
Some insurers offers personal accident covers for you and your passengers as part of their insurance plan. (This may or may not be necessary for you, depending on whether you have an existing personal accident coverage)

Repair Options
Restrictions on repair workshops and new part replacement applies. Usually cheaper premium policy will tend to have more restrictions. This contributes to the advice that the cheapest motor car insurance may not be the best.

Towing/Roadside Assistance
Some insurers provide towing and roadside assistance in their plan.

Courtesy Car
Some insurers provide a courtesy car while your vehicle is under repair.

What are different types of car insurance available in Singapore?

There are three main categories of motor insurance. Each category provides different coverage, affecting your right to claim should an accident occur:

(Most car owners in Singapore opt for the Comprehensive Cover, as it gives the best protection)

#1: Third Party Only Coverage, which covers:

- Death or injury to other parties
- Damage to other parties’ property

#2: Third Party, Fire and Theft Coverage, which covers:

- Death or injury to other parties
- Damage to other parties’ property
- Fire damage to, or theft of, your vehicle

#3: Comprehensive Coverage, which covers:

- Death or injury to other parties
- Damage to other parties’ property
- Fire damage to, or theft of, your vehicle
- Accidental damage to your vehicle
- Personal accident cover (for private cars only)
- Medical expenses (for private cars only)

Optional Benefits for Comprehensive Policies
(which may be subject to payment of additional premium)

- Windscreen damage
- Damage arising from riot, strike and civil commotion
- Damage arising from flood and windstorm
- Liability of passengers for acts of negligence
- Personal accident benefits for passengers
- Additional excess
- No-Claim Discount protection (for private cars only)

These Optional Benefits may seem like icing on the cake, but you may find them important nevertheless. Many reputable insurers include these benefits into their coverage while others don’t.

If you feel that these optional benefits are important to you, you can add them as Riders inside your car insurance policy. Nevertheless the total car insurance premium may increase as a result.

Note: You can only sign up for a Third Party Only motor insurance if your car is fully paid up. And if you want to get a TPFT (third party fire & theft) policy, you have to seek the approval of the Hire Purchase company first.
